HALTON HILLS, ON – Spreading tax payments over 7 months from June to December is a new option available to residents and businesses who can demonstrate financial hardship due to COVID-19. Property owners experiencing a temporary suspension or reduction in pay, employment loss, excessive business revenue loss or temporary business closure can contact the Town to discuss their eligibility.
“We hope that providing the opportunity for people to spread out their payments by a further two months, that this may ease some hardship,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “We are cognizant of the challenges that the pandemic has had on the community – both personally and professionally so we are doing what we can.”
The municipality previously provided taxpayers relief from penalties, interest and fees up to June 30, 2020 and delayed the due date for final property taxes.
People interested in applying to the program are encouraged to review the eligibility criteria on the Town’s website.
The Mayor noted that the program had to be application-based given that the municipality has a legal obligation to remit monies to Halton Region and the school boards. “Regardless of the Town’s tax collection policies, we have a legislative responsibility per the Municipal Act to collect the taxes on behalf of the school boards and Halton Region,” he said.
