Diabetes, you probably know someone with it, or maybe you have it yourself and you probably know many people treat diabetes with insulin.
But did you know:
100 years ago, Canadians discovered insulin.
100 years later even more Canadians have diabetes than ever before.
Diabetes or pre-diabetes affects 1 in 3 Canadians.
1 in 2 young adults will develop diabetes in their remaining lifetime.
Sadly, Diabetes is one of Canada’s most successful diseases. ( diabetes.ca )
And you are even less likely to know that the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada is holding ‘Ride for a Cause’ on Saturday, July 31 at locations all across Canada.
Their website states “The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada is proud to support the ‘We Can’t Wait Another 100 Years’ campaign to commemorate the discovery of insulin and addresses the urgency about diabetes. Fostering a national conversation: although the 100TH anniversary is an incredible discovery; insulin is not enough. It’s the starting line, not the finish line for diabetes.”
“It’s an annual event where riders from multiple groups across Canada ride at the same time to raise money and awareness about diabetes. This year Old Vintage Cranks (on Willow Street in Acton) is hosting a stop for the Toronto to London riders and we invite the public to come out, greet the riders, see the bikes, and if you can, make a donation.” Scott Strachan, Owner of Old Vintage Cranks tells Acton UP.
This year’s ride has already raised $12,200 to date. “Historically the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Ontario has raised over $50,000 and continues to support kids living with type 1 diabetes, fund vital programs and services for those affected by diabetes in our communities and fund vital research. The 2021 financial goal for Ride For Cause - Let’s End Diabetes is $100,000 or more to celebrate the 100 year anniversary and working towards crossing the finish line to End Diabetes.” (http://rideforcause.ca/)
Riders are expected at the base of Willow Street (near the library) between 11 -1130 a.m. Saturday, July 31.
