Opinion: 2021 A Year in Review

Macenzie Rebelo

A glimpse into the highs and lows of 2021.

There have been many ups and downs throughout this hard year. Many lives were lost due to the outbreak of the Corona Virus and the variants that continue to develop. In March we stayed home with our families and patiently waited for things to change and now in December we’ve learned to survive with the new normal. We have seen businesses closed, and new ones take their place. Although, 2021 has been extremely difficult and the loss the world has experienced cannot possibly be made light of.

It is also important to acknowledge the bright side of 2021 and how well Canada has been able to push through adversity. Within Canada alone, (at the time of writing) 29.2 million people are fully vaccinated, which makes up 76.8% of the population. By January 2022 booster shots will also be available to the public as well.

Within Halton Hills, most of the residences are fully or partially vaccinated and plan on receiving their second dose. Due to Acton’s willingness to adapt to change the community has been flourishing in the last months of 2021. Malls, restaurants, community centres and activities are at least partially open to the public. Small businesses throughout Acton are supported by the community and continue to thrive. Alongside local Christmas markets and festivals that support local business and bring the community together. Acton, like many other towns and cities in Canada, has found a way to blossom in the darkness that COVID-19 has caused.

Granted, there is still a long way to go until things go back to ‘normal,’ 2022 does not seem to be so daunting as the year before. Hopefully, January will bring Canada safety, freedom, laughter and most importantly harmony. This New year many people are going home or visiting friends whom they have not seen since the pandemic started. Loved ones are being reunited and those who are in mourning no longer have to go through it alone. Today let’s celebrate the accomplishments Canada and its people have made and cheers to more in the future.
