The Mexican Way will be joining the, already diverse, line up of downtown restaurants. Acton UP spoke with owners Julián Cruz and Verónica Vélez about this exciting development. “We were supposed to open a location pre-covid, in Georgetown” say Cruz, “but then COVID happened and we couldn’t close.” In response they reached out to the community on Facebook asking if people would be interested in ordering ahead online “and we were swamped with replies.” Their format is unique. They post their menu on their website early in the week. It is shared via Facebook. There are always 2 taco meal options (different proteins and sides). Orders close Thursday and are picked up Friday-Sunday. They offer dinner for 4 or dinner for 8. The restaurant will allow the couple to open up and expand their menu. Cruz, who moved to Canada 4 years ago, has lived all over Mexico and is excited to share his “authentic food but adapted to the Canadian palette.” Vélez, originally from Columbia, has lived in Canada since she was 12. She says “Mexican people believe you please people with food. Sharing is part of the experience. Everything we make, we do it with love.” The couple is excited to be coming to Acton. “About 50% of our current customers live in Acton. And it is central for customers from Erin, Rockwood and Georgetown.” They had put finding a location on the back burner when this one “fell into our laps” says Vélez. “It’s meant to be there.” The location, 37 Mill Street East, is currently occupied by The Plant Society Kitchen. The Mexican Way takes possession of the premises on May 1. They are planning some small renovations says Vélez, “simple with beautiful Mexican colours” and some “test trials and menu finalizing” adds Cruz, with an eye on opening the first week of June. The couple is also applying for licensing to serve alcohol. Because - tacos and cerveza.
