Milton’s Little Superhero Has Big Dreams

Writer's picture: Chris Golden Chris Golden

Liam was born on Valentine’s day 2015. At just 3 weeks, Mom, Deana learned that Liam had Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and together they have been raising awareness and funds ever since.

From her web page, www.superheromom.ca, you can learn that “Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. At present, there is no cure. CF causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. The degree of CF severity differs from person to person, however, the persistence and ongoing infection in the lungs, with destruction of lungs and loss of lung function, will eventually lead to death in the majority of people with CF….It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.”

As you can imagine, COVID only complicates matters for this young family. But, never the less, they persist. This year the pair, with the help of good friend Staci James, are working to raise $25,000 for Sick Kids Hospital to have Liam’s name added to “the wall”.

Liam goes to Sick Kids every 3 months for a check up. In December he had a two week stay and that’s when Deana and Staci noticed “the walls of the main corridor were covered in names. It just keeps going, all these names.” With a little research they discovered that getting your name on the wall is a result of a $25,000 donation which is what Liam and his mom decided to do.

They are raising funds through a Go Fund Me page and various other fundraisers. They also sell books and hoodies on their website.

Upcoming fundraisers can also be found on their Facebook Page, Liam’s Mission. These include Valentine’s Day pails, customized with your child’s name and filled with toys and treats. Pails are $15, and $10 from every sale is donated to Sick Kids.

Also of note is the “Egg My Yard” event that is in the planning stages. For $20 volunteers will distribute 20 candy filled eggs in your yard (or 45 for $40) around Easter time. The team would like to expand this event from Milton to Halton Hills but is in need of volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to spread some cheer and raise some funds for Sick Kids, you can email Deana at dlwilson349@gmail.com.

Let’s help Liam be a Sick Kids Superhero and raise $25,000!
