Mayor,s Column Febuary 2018

I applaud the Provincial Government for banning door-to-door sales. These are the often aggressive and misleading salesman trying to sell you water heaters, filters, water softeners, furnaces etc. About 5 years ago, I was getting calls from an area in town that an aggressive water heater salesman was knocking on doors using my name as an endorsement. I phoned the Toronto based company up and between you and me, the language may have gone blue – but they ceased this practice.

Halton Hills played a role in this legislation as Councillor Somerville and I raised this issue at council in May 2016. We put forward a resolution that was unanimously supported by council, urging the Province to support a Private Members Bill to ban these pesky, aggressive sales reps.

On February 7th, I had the honour of attending our Halton Hills Fire Department Recognition night. MPP Ted Arnott, Ontario Fire Marshal Ross Nichols, Chief DeHooge and many councillors as well as firefighters past and present along with their families attended this wonderful ceremony. We should be proud of the dedicated service and commitment they give and continue to give to our community.

The graduating class consisted of nine firefighters. There were many long service awards handed out. 25 years: Robert Adema, Greg Waller, Todd McClements and 30 years: Laurie Otten. Our former Fire Chief and present Town CAO Brent Marshall was awarded for his 45 years of service. A special thanks to the 10 retirees. We wish them all good luck in their future endeavours.

Did you know that in 2017 our firefighters responded to 979 calls – 47 fires, 252 fire alarm activations, 102 carbon monoxide alarms, 166 motor vehicle accidents and rescues, 95 medical public assists and 89 hazardous material incidents, just to name a few types of calls out into our community.

Over and above emergency responses, our firefighters contribute enormously to our community with public education events and special events. The list is long but to mention a few: Fire Prevention Week, Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, Safe at Home in the Hills, Acton Fall Fair Education Day, Trick or Treat on Main and Mill, Tim Horton’s Camp Day, McHappy Day, Terry Fox Run, Walk for Georgetown Hospital, Light Up the Hills, and Food and Toy Drives. In 2017, our firefighters installed and inspected 265 child seats at no cost to our residents as well as played the N.H.L. alumni to raise money for Cashh.
