M.M. Robinson High School receives Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement for effective approach to Math learning Award recognizes the work of school staff to nurture students’ passion for math The Halton District School Board is proud to acknowledge M.M. Robinson High School in Burlington for their extraordinary work in effectively using data to support student achievement. The school has received the 2018 Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement for their success in fulfilling curriculum expectations on EQAO assessments during the last three years and for nurturing students’ passion for math. Each year, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) recognizes schools in Ontario that have effectively used data to support student learning. Schools recognized through the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement program have used a wide range of information, including EQAO data, to develop action plans based on their unique circumstances, and have seen improvements in student achievement over time. “The staff at M.M. Robinson High School are dedicated to focusing on empowering students in their learning,” says Rebecca Newcombe, Acting Principal of M.M. Robinson High School. Our leaders in Math and Science, Maggie Warneke and Steve Tolton, have been instrumental in creating an engaging project-based program. The department’s focus on increasing student confidence in problem solving while also continuing to build strong relationships with students has led to this high level of achievement.“ Criteria for selection of the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement varies each year to highlight different areas of focus in public education. The 2018 criteria was “Approaches to Math Learning That Made a Difference” to celebrate schools that supported students’ passion, which led to academic success in math. As a recipient of this year’s Recognition of Achievement, M.M. Robinson High School demonstrated strength and growth in student attitudinal and behavioural data from EQAO questionnaires and improvement over three years in EQAO results for both Grade 9 applied and academic math. The Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement program provides an opportunity to share, highlight and learn about promising practices in education. This recognition of achievement will be celebrated at a future board meeting. Date to be determined.
