Legion News Sad to hear of the passing of Dermot Richardson who will be missed at the Branch. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Marie, Stephen and Brenda and also their families. On Sunday, January 19th we sent a team of darts players to Port Credit for the 2020 Zone B7 qualifying round of the Senior Darts Championship. We had a good showing, with Rod Leech placing 2nd in the Singles event whilst Trevor Marais & Wayne Amirault placed 5th in the Doubles, but most impressive was these three joined by Jimmy Haggett, came first in the Team Event, making Br197 Zone B Champions. They will all represent Br197 in the next round, as they all move on to District B which is being played in Stoney Creek on February 22nd. Their win ensures that Acton will host next years qualifying round. Well done guys !!!!! On Saturday January 26th, our Ladies Auxiliary hosted their Qualifying District Competition in the Games room. Two teams were entered by Br197 LAX and team 1 consisting of Sue Poulsen, Peggy Harris, Tee Uiterwyck and Angie Mowat placed first overall, whilst team two consisting of Joan Maloney, Joanne Knight, Lori Savage and Nancy placed fourth. Both teams will advance to the District Competition which will be held in Brampton at BR.15 on April 4th. There appears to be a resurgence in sports participation at the Branch these days as we are sending more teams to different events. Winning teams not only bring home trophies but also the opportunity to host that event the following year. (we are allowed to host three consecutive years. before surrendering that role, even though we might win) In Zone B7 there are 11 Legions. and 59 Legions within District B. Golden Horseshoe. If our team wins at Zone level we host the next years event which can prove quite lucrative for our bar sales and our LAX catering. Winning at District level means even more visitors would be in attendance. We are the permanent home for the Zone Golf and have the perfect site for hosting events, so let us get out there and bring more events home to Acton. On Sunday February 2nd, I understand that more than fifty people had a fun day playing Winter Horseshoes, especially Ashley UIterwyck and Angie Mowat who finished up Winners on the day. Well done Ladies. I understand the Town no longer puts on Winterfest, but Branch 197 is making plans for a Winter fun Day, scheduled for Sunday February 16th. This is usually a great day for the kids, and all are welcome I am looking forward to the Valentines Day Dance on Friday February 14th. Lynda tells me that she will be serving Swiss Chalet Chicken, Baked Potato, and all the trimming. Once again we will be dancing to the music of “ELIO’ Sunnybrook visit is now scheduled for March 22nd.
