Legion News (27/09/20)

On behalf of the executive and members of the branch, we would like to offer our sincere sympathy in the loss of one of Branch 120, Georgetown's World War 2 veterans, Shel Lawr. Shel was a resident of Sunnybrook Veterans Centre for the last few years and he loved it when those veterans visited our branch. He often met up with his grandchildren during these visits. When Acton visited Sunnybrook, he was always waiting at the door to greet us and was happy to see people who were close to his home of Georgetown. We always had our picture taken with Shel before we left the hospital. we will certainly miss him. We thank him for his service. Peggy Graham, Past President, Sick and Donations Chair.

This year’s Remembrance Parade scheduled for Saturday November 7th has been cancelled. In its place we are planning a scaled down version of the Cenotaph ceremony to take place on Wednesday November 11th. What it will look like has yet to be decided and will depend a lot in government guidelines in place at the time. Further information will be issued closer to the date.

Our current Poppy fund is $20,990.55.

At a meeting on September 21st it was determined, that due to the ever-changing regulations being issued by the Government, we will not be able to open the Branch in the foreseeable future. We will keep the membership informed as best we can, using social media.

It is the time of year for the Remembrance Day Contest of the Royal Canadian Legion. The contest consists of a literary component and a poster contest. The Acton schools have graciously done this each year. Students can submit posters, poems and essays on own if they wish or through your school. If anyone requires further information, please contact Peggy Graham at rclbr197@cogeco.net. First place winners are submitted to zone and then if win there to District, Provincial and Dominion Command. We appreciate all entries. This is a fantastic way for students to show appreciation for our veterans as we remember them through pictures and stories or poetry.

It is extremely important that members renew their membership for 2021. You can renew online at https://www.legion.ca/join-us/renewal or you can submit a cheque to the branch by mail and include your Legion Number as well as your membership type. Annual membership is unchanged at $60.

Please check the webpage at legion197.com, and in addition we will be posting information on Facebook.

You can email the branch at rclbr197@cogeco.net
