Halton Police Continue to Investigate Theft from Vehicles

Over the course of 2018, The Halton Police have been investigating 478 reports of vehicles being entered and property stolen from them throughout Milton, Acton and Georgetown. From September 1st to October 23rd alone there have been 93 occurrences where vehicles have been entered.

The majority of the vehicles entered were left unlocked with valuables inside.

Theft from vehicles is a crime of opportunity and typically occurs overnight under the cover of darkness where culprit(s) walk along residential streets trying door handles until they find one that has been left unlocked. Targeted items stolen included currency, electronics, wallets, purses, sunglasses, and gift/credit cards.

"Addressing crime trends such as theft from vehicles is a shared responsibility of the police and the community" says Detective Sergeant Dave Costantini who oversees all criminal investigations in One District. "A pivotal first step in preventing these crimes is ensuring that all members of our community protect their property by securing their vehicles at all times".

Halton Police would like to remind the public of the following additional prevention tips:

Park in a well-lit and attended areas whenever possible Never leave spare keys in your vehicle Never leave personal identification or valuables in your vehicle If you have to leave valuables in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk. Don't tempt thieves by leaving packages or purses in plain view or on the seat. Remove GPS navigation and cell phone devices & power cords from view when not in your vehicle Help police catch those responsible by keeping an eye out in your communities and immediately reporting any suspicious activity

Should anyone have information to assist with these ongoing investigations they are encouraged to contact Detective Paul Harrower of the One District Street Crime unit at 905-825-4747 ext. 2491.
