On Tuesday, May 25, at approximately 1 p.m., fire engulfed a refrigerated trailer parked at the loading dock at the Cargill Cocoa and Chocolate Plant at 24 Ontario Street in Georgetown. Fourteen Halton Hills Fire Fighters and three pumper trucks from all three fire stations responded to the call.

“There was a malfunction in the refrigeration unit on the trailer itself." according to Deputy Chief, Bruce Morrison. "Originally the call came in that the factory was on fire, but that wasn't the case. It was the trailer that was on fire. The fire was impinging onto the loading dock because of an overhang that had started to scorch. Some of the heat transferred into the building, but the fire didn't get into the building.”

Investigators pegged that damage around $160,000 to the trailer and the scorched structure, and $40,000 to the contents of the trailer.

“The guys knocked the fire down quickly. The loading bay doors were open and some of the heat from the fire had activated one of the sprinkler heads in the loading bay area. So what was left afterwards was basically a clean-up and ventilation,” said Morrison. “We were there for a couple of hours, including the investigation time.
