Downtown Acton Revitalization Continues in 2019

HALTON HILLS, ON – The Downtown Acton Business Improvement Area (DABIA) continues its revitalization with another business having opened early in January. The Co-operators Group Limited relocated to new premises in the 8 Main St. North plaza (unit 4). This brings the total business openings in the last eight months to nine.

The other most recent opening was on December 1, when the Plant Society Kitchen, located at 37 Mill St. East held its grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony. Plant Society Kitchen is a unique vegan cafe/restaurant offering catering, cooking classes and more.

These latest business openings highlight an exciting eight months in historic downtown Acton, which included the launch of a new logo and website for the DABIA in late June, a new BIA general manager in July, and the opening of seven new shops and services over the summer and fall including: Ambition Performing Arts Studio, Helson Law Office, JV Computer Repair, Oh Behave Canine Pawellege, One Stop Medical Clinic and Pharmacy, TicToc Watch and Clock Repair, and World of Work Wear.

“The economic prosperity of downtown Acton is a key priority of the Town’s economic development strategy. The Town and BIA collaborate closely to advance business growth and contribute to the vibrancy of the area,” said Mayor Bonnette.

Downtown Acton has also been host to numerous events, including the highest-ever turn out for the Leathertown Festival in August, Culture Days and Doors Open in September, the newly-envisioned Halloween celebration, Haunted Hills, and remarkable attendance at the Legion on Remembrance Day to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The 2018 year closed out with revitalized/repurposed Christmas décor and LED lighting, which provided over $60,000 of decorative value to the downtown space. This environmental approach will save the BIA over $17,000 over the lifetime of the new LEDs.

“As the Council representative on the BIA Board, it’s been extremely gratifying to see the very positive and tangible rewards of the proactive work being done by Town staff and the organization’s manager,” said Councillor Michael Albano. Adding, “Business growth occurs by diligent effort, not happenstance.”

Damian Szybalski, Manager of Economic Development, Innovation and Culture with the Town agreed. “We are impressed by the new energy shown by the Downtown Acton BIA, demonstrated through refreshed and re-imagined events,” he said. “We are very proud to partner with this organization.”

The positive changes are continuing into 2019. Work is underway now for a number of other service business openings in 2019, including food service and health-related services.
