Whistle Stop - First Look Inside and Opening Date? The Downtown area is about to get perked UP with a new diner and cafe. We had a chance to talk to the owner, as well as get a first look inside Acton’s new Whistle Stop Diner and Whistle Stop to Go. In 1998 Kevin Kim (an acton resident for 18 years) started the Whistle Stop in Rockwood and has been making coffee, pancakes, and sandwiches ever since. “I took an opportunity to own a business” says Kevin, who within the next 2-3 weeks, will be opening another location under the same name in Acton. Kevin originally got the name “Whistle Stop” by hosting a contest in Rockwood, “ It was called R&M Shoppe when i first came to Rockwood in 1998. I didn’t like the name, so I put a contest for $100 to change it. 2 customers came up with Whistle Stop so I gave them each $50. I guess they called it that because it is located by train rail.” “Everything is done," states Kevin "but I didn’t have time to buy all the plates and cups, I have to set UP the coffee machine, also I need to hire more people.” He is accepting applicant resumes at actonkim@hotmail.com The Whistle Stop diner and Whistle Stop to Go will be located at the corner of Mill St. E and Elgin St. Acton in the old location of the Sweet Molly’s building. Beyond being owner of the shop, Kevin is also owner of the building. Kevin has made significant improvements to the inside of the building in preparation for the new cafe and diner, “I spent a lot of money, that’s for sure”, Kevin says with a laugh, “ I had no choice, because this has been vacant for a long time. I’ve been waiting for the tenant but nobody is coming in. I didn’t want to spend so much money cause its not easy to succeed in a small town like this”, Kevin continues “But since I own the building, I could put my money in here, and put the value UP”. Since we posted a picture of the Whistle Stop signs going UP on Facebook, there has been lots of hype and questions as to what would be on the menu, and whether it will be the same as the Rockwood location. Kevin assures patrons of Rockwood’s Whistle Stop that the menu will be the same, offering the same great food, prices and coffee. “It will be exactly the same, and the prices will be exactly the same, just the inside will be much more modern and much nicer”. Kevin can’t wait for the community to consume his coffee saying “many people joke around with me saying ‘the world's greatest coffee in Rockwood’ so, I have a big business for coffee in Rockwood, I’d like to go to Acton to sell a lot of coffee as well. I know there is a McDonald's and I know there is a Tim Hortons, but my coffee is different, price is probably a little cheaper, but its a better coffee, a specialized coffee, very special beans I’m using here”. You can expect to see the start of the Whistle Stop in the next two or three weeks.
